LA Galaxy-Portland Timbers Preview (10/14/26)
Despite authoring a 5-match winless streak through September and now into October, the Portland Timbers are very much alive in the playoff race. However, they currently sit in 10th place and will need to pull themselves above the playoff line. Tomorrow’s game against the Galaxy, who sit ahead of Portland in the final Wild Card spot, will provide the opportunity for a leapfrogging. But there’s one absolute truth to acknowledge when these two teams meet on a giant pitch in Carson: there will be goals.
The Galaxy Report
In the 13th minute of the previous matchup between these two teams back on March 22nd, Kristoffer Velde gave the Timbers the lead after a quality start to the game. However, Kamal Miller got sent off 7 minutes later, and the entire complexion of the game changed. The Galaxy equalized through Joao Klauss on the half hour mark, and both teams gutted out a 1-1 draw.
LA occupied 10th place in the West following this disappointing result. When their entire body of work following this game is viewed from a big-picture lens, one takeaway is very clear: any semblance of consistency is absent.
Over the next 24 league games, the Galaxy (9-9-11, 36 points, 9W/18S) have been unable to string two wins together. So let’s take a look at everything that has happened between the wins and see if any conclusions can be drawn.
Following their 1-1 draw with Portland in late March, the Galaxy lost 2-1 at home to Minnesota. A 2-1 victory in Austin on April 11th was sandwiched between a comprehensive 7-2 aggregate defeat to Toluca in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup. They closed the month of April with a 2-1 win against Salt Lake, but it was preceded by a 2-2 draw in Dallas and a 2-1 loss to Columbus. A 1-1 draw with Vancouver followed, and a 2-1 win in Atlanta gave LA a 3-game unbeaten streak. Some momentum had actually been built, but it was squandered in their next game.
The Portland Timbers were unable to hold onto a 3-1 lead in Kansas City on Saturday night, but the Galaxy’s encounters with the Wizards are even more bewildering. SKC, a team with 6 total wins on the season, was able to do the double against the Galaxy this year. The Wizards took a 3-0 lead during their May 13th meeting, and a late Gabriel Pec goal saved LA from a dubious shutout. Not to be dismayed by allowing the unquestioned (pre-Andre Luiz) worst team in the league to beat them twice, the Galaxy promptly went up to Seattle and beat the Sounders 2-0. Their Apertura ended with a 1-1 home draw against Houston, and a 5-5-5 record was good enough for 9th place as the season paused for the World Cup.

In the midst of another stretch of mediocrity (following a completely mediocre and disappointing 2025), some roster shake-up occurred during the summer. Cerrillo and Yamane, two crucial players on the MLS Cup-winning team from 2024, departed the club in the summer. But Pec was the biggest departure, leaving for Brazilian side Cruzeiro with the Galaxy receiving a club-record fee of “up to $13.5M.” So that’s one starting right back, one starting defensive midfielder, and one of the top right wingers in the league gone in the summer. Unfortunately for Pec, he broke his leg in his Cruzeiro debut. No one wants to see that happen.

So Will Kuntz went wild to fill the open roster slots. Furuhashi was a cult hero at Celtic with 86 goals in 167 games before a disappointing move to Birmingham City saw the Japanese striker notch 3 goals in 31 games in his lone season at St. Andrew’s. He joined the Galaxy for a fee of $1.3M and signed a contract until June 2031 (when Furuhashi will be 36 years old). 34-year-old Sergi Roberto, one of Riqui Puig’s teammates at Barcelona, joined from free agency as a Cerrillo replacement. Calegari was a former Galaxy player from 2023. Plucking Pablo Ruiz, who is a good player that has been plagued from injury, is some pretty smart business as well.
But the Galaxy needed to replace Pec, so they brought disgruntled winger Hirving Lozano in on loan to fill the vacated DP slot. The Mexican winger, who is still contracted to San Diego, is not a right winger. The Galaxy have a purchase option on the deal in case they want to keep Lozano permanently.
All of this roster movement didn’t make the Galaxy better or worse. They entered the World Cup break as the definition of middling, and ended the transfer window as a middling team. LA began the Clausura with a 5-game winless streak featuring a 3-0 home loss in El Trafico, a 3-1 home loss to St. Louis, two draws against San Jose and Dallas, and a 1-0 road loss to Houston. This streak was broken up by a 1-0 win against San Jose in the reverse fixture, before a 2-2 draw in Montreal and a 3-1 loss in San Diego left the Galaxy with 6 points from their first 8 Clausura matches. Then they beat New England 2-1 and got thumped by Vancouver 3-0. It was finally time for the Galaxy to author their second 3-match unbeaten streak of the season.
This streak began with a 1-1 draw with Seattle before back-to-back wins against Minnesota (where the Loons blew a 2-1 lead at home) and Colorado (where the Rapids blew a 2-0 lead) brought the Galaxy into the international break with some momentum. Unfortunately for them, a 6-2 loss in St. Louis was waiting for them when the season resumed on Sunday.
The 2026 Galaxy are equal parts dangerous and vulnerable. Despite an offseason that saw them re-work their backline, they continue to leak goals and haven’t gotten the consistent production up front to overcome that leaky defense. They remain pretty Timbers-coded, for lack of a better term. But they remain in the driver’s seat for a Wild Card spot, even though every team in their immediate vicinity has a game in hand on them (Portland included). Head coach Greg Vanney has been no stranger to scrutiny this season. Is he fighting for his job after the highs of 2024 gave way to the lows of 2025 and were followed by the mediocrity of 2026?
LAG Injury Report & Projected Starting XI

Furuhashi started against St. Louis but was subbed off in the 11th minute due to this thigh injury. Lozano is expected to miss significant time.

The big story of the Galaxy’s whooping in St. Louis (besides the 6 goals conceded) was how much rotation occurred in the frontline. Paintsil, Reus, and Klauss came off the bench. Taylor has a goal involvement in each of his last two games. I think that Vanney will change into a 4-2-3-1 shape for extra defensive protection. Having said that, 3 of the backline starters from Sunday’s curb-stomping are still expected to keep their starting roles. Carlos Garces (the Asterisk causer) is a candidate to replace one of Haak or Glesnes, with Haak potentially moving into the midfield. But a pairing of Roberto (the 8) and Sanabria (the 6) should work on paper, in theory. Marcinkowski’s claim to fame is spilling the ball outside of the box and allowing Dairon Asprilla to perform a Zlatan. It’s been a weird decade for the Galaxy, who have been mostly mid outside of the 2024 Cup-winning season. This roster, which is still handicapped by the after-effects of that title, is also pretty middling. But they do have attackers who love open space and are willing to score 2+ goals a game to cover for this leaky defense.
The Timbers Report
Two dropped points in Kansas City does not boost the Portland Timbers’ (9-6-13, 33 points, 10W/19S) playoff chances. That collapse looks even worse when the bigger league-wide picture is taken into account.
Only two Western Conference teams were able to taste victory last weekend. That team was St. Louis, who have increased their unbeaten streak to 20 games. They accomplished that feat by demolishing the Galaxy 6-2, with five of those goals coming in the first half. Seattle’s 3-0 win in New England was the other victory. More matchdays like that one are bound to occur throughout the rest of the season as the other Western Conference teams begin their various jockeying for their final table positions.
The Timbers’ final 6 games, oddly enough, are all winnable. That’s due the nature of playing in a parity league and the sport of soccer in general. But these next two, against the Galaxy and Colorado, present the biggest opportunities to shoot back up the table by taking points from the teams directly above them. “The trend has not been good and we want to get back to wins as soon as possible,” Marti Cifuentes said on Monday. “I’m aware of the Galaxy’s result yesterday, but at the same time I’m aware that they rotated. I think the coach was very clear that Wednesday’s game will be the most important of the season. It will be for us at the same time.”
Not winning in Kansas City puts the pressure on the Timbers to win tomorrow. Aspects of the first-half performance against SKC were definitely positive, but the results are much more important at this stage of the season.
The Stat Sheet
It’s been a while since I went over some basic player stats. Given that 6 games remain in the regular season, it’s worth checking in to see Portland’s statistical leaders and where they rank in the league.
Goals: Kevin Kelsy, 9 (T-11th, 32nd overall)
7 games have passed since Kelsy was sold to Rangers. Kristoffer Velde (8 goals, T-12th, 40th overall) is Portland’s top scorer among current players. Ariel Lassiter and David Da Costa are tied for 3rd on the team with 5 goals each.
Assists: David Da Costa, 7 (T-6th, 19th overall)
I do not count secondary assists. Portuguese Dave leads the way with 7. Interestingly, if secondary assists are counted, the Timbers have the third-most assists in the Western Conference with 37. Only San Jose (39) and Vancouver (38) have more. Velde (6 assists, T-7th, 28th overall) comes in 2nd with Lassiter and Bassett are tied for 3rd with 4 assists each.
Minutes: James Pantemis, 2,520 (T-1st)
Pantemis is the only Timber to feature in every game this season. 9 other MLS players have matched him. Kristoffer Velde has moved past Finn Surman to take Portland’s top spot among field players with 2,302 minutes (46th). Surman and Jimer Fory are the only other Timbers to surpass 2,000 minutes so far.
Chances created: Kristoffer Velde, 54 (14th)
No surprises here. Da Costa is 2nd on the team with 42 (32nd).
Expected goals: Kevin Kelsy, 8.9 (28th)
Velde occupies 2nd place with 5.5 (59th).
Expected assists: Kristoffer Velde, 6.5 (12th)
David Da Costa is 2nd with 4.4 (37th).
I think those are all the relevant counting stats that bear repeating. Although Velde and Da Costa are leading the team in a fair amount of these categories, it’s fair to say that their production hasn’t been DP-quality. Does it feel like the Timbers are actually 3rd in the West with 51 goals scored? They've quietly had a very productive year goal-scoring wise. It's been a weird season.
PTFC Injury Report & Projected Starting XI

No changes to the injury report with a four-day gap between Saturday and Wednesday. On Monday, Cifuentes said that Surman’s injury recovery is “going better than expected.” He participated in warm-ups with the squad but trained on the side when the actual drills began. Based on my gut, I think he’ll be back for the October 24th game against Charlotte. Saturday against Colorado seems premature.

The best possible lineup has to start tomorrow. That includes no changes in the backline and the front three. However, the midfield is now a little tough to pick. I wouldn’t object to another Joao Ortiz start, but I think Bassett retains his starting role after not featuring in Kansas City. Eric Izoita is another candidate to start, but it’s unclear how much emphasis has been put on making sure he’s available for Friday’s T2 playoff game.
The choice between Chara and Jose Caicedo is also difficult. I’m leaning towards Chara because I think Caicedo needs to be saved for the Colorado game. Both players should see the field tomorrow regardless. Plus it’s hard for me not to get wistful. Chara made his first appearance for the Timbers in Carson 15 years ago. In addition, because he registered a secondary assist on Da Costa’s Saturday goal, the club captain has reached 50 career goal contributions for the Timbers. “To be honest, for me, because of the position I play, every one is really special,” Chara said on Monday in regards to his constant achievement of various milestones. “It means a lot to me and my family too because there has been a lot of effort during these seasons.”
Tactical Preview
Compression
“For me, it’s about the moments. It depends on the position. We have big principles, clear principles, about when the right time is to jam and be aggressive.”
Portland’s high press worked wonders in the first half against SKC. They routinely gobbled up second balls and maintained the half-field control that Marti Cifuentes desires. I’m going to be paying attention to the moments in transition where the decision to jam or drop is hazy. Those are the moments that the Timbers really struggle with.
The Open Space
And they’re going to have to deal with those decisions on a gigantic field. The Great Plains of Carson provides a ton of space to attack during transition opportunities. That works in the Galaxy’s favor, sure, but it also favors Portland.
During this fixture last season (a 4-2 Timbers win) Portland counterattacked the Galaxy to death. Da Costa was outstanding in this regard, routinely overloading the left side with Antony. I still expect the vast majority of Portland’s attacking movements to come down the left side, but Lassiter’s excellent performance against SKC means that the Galaxy cannot neglect Portland’s right either. This game is going to be won or lost in transition, and I think that the Timbers need to have a strong counterattacking mentality to capitalize on those moments.

Table Time

The Timbers could climb into 9th place with a win. However, a loss combined with other results could drop them as far as 12th. Vancouver clinched a playoff spot last weekend. St. Louis could do the same tomorrow.
Colorado, who the Timbers play on Saturday, host Minnesota tomorrow. Seattle looks to keep their 9-match unbeaten streak alive in Frisco. The top-four race, alongside the Wild Card race, is very much alive.
Final Whistle
T2’s playoff game is on Friday at Providence Park. Kickoff time is scheduled for 7 PM, and tickets are free. 107ist is opening up the lower 100s of the North End. I urge everyone who can to attend this game and bring the noise for a T2 team that has made the playoffs for the first time in their history. More words on T2 are coming later this week.
The only short-term item that matters over these final 6 games is playoff qualification. Tomorrow’s game is a true six-pointer, and it will be followed by another one on Saturday. But some long-term conclusions can be drawn from the performances of the squad and the players. I think the result matters more than the performance tomorrow.
These Timbers are entering this game on a 5-game winless run amidst a stretch of 2 wins in their last 10 games. That streak stretches back to Cifuentes’ first league game in charge. 9 points from 10 games over a pretty soft schedule in August and September is below the expectations of the club and the fanbase. However, the Timbers continue to be aided by a Western Conference mud puddle full of teams who drop points exactly like they do. One of those teams is the LA Galaxy. Portland is unbeaten in their last 4 against the Galaxy, and looked set to take 3 points in their prior meeting this year. These players are surely going to want revenge, and they’re still gunning for a playoff spot. The stakes for tomorrow’s game are immense for both teams. So much so that Vanney rotated after an international break with the intent of starting his best possible team against their most direct playoff rivals. And the Portland Timbers have to win. The climb continues.
