LAFC-Portland Timbers Preview (8/22/2026)
On April 11th, the Portland Timbers faced an undefeated LAFC at Providence Park. Not only were the Black-and-Gold undefeated, they hadn’t conceded a goal in league play through their first six games. The Timbers broke both of those streaks, although LAFC was pretty heavily rotated. Now the reverse fixture is here, and the trajectories from mid-April have been reversed for each team.
The LAFC Report
That April game took place in between LAFC’s CCC quarterfinal tie with Cruz Azul. After a 3-0 home win in the first leg, LAFC managed to get a 1-1 draw at Estadio Cuauhtemoc. However, their run ended in the semifinals with a 5-2 defeat on aggregate to eventual champions Toluca. The second leg of that tie was a 4-0 defeat, which began a slight tailspin for the Black-and-Gold.
They proceeded to lose their next three games: one to Houston, one in St. Louis, and one in Nashville. However, they entered the World Cup break on a high note with a 1-0 victory against the Sounders. That was the first loss of Seattle’s ongoing 8-game league losing streak.
Like the Sounders, LAFC’s Clausura began with a rivalry game. Unlike the Sounders, they were able to defeat their rivals, notching a 3-0 victory in Carson. A 3-1 win against RSL and a 4-0 win against SKC followed, and LAFC suddenly looked like a contender again coming out of the World Cup break. Good for them. Their contender status was suddenly called into question following a 1-1 draw in Vancouver where the Whitecaps steamrolled LAFC but failed to properly convert their chances. The Black-and-Gold technically went undefeated in Leagues Cup, but only 1 of those games were wins (Toluca). The other two were penalty shootout victories (Chivas and Queretaro).
However, LAFC (10-4-7, 34 points, 3W/6S) haven’t had a great week. It began with a 1-0 loss at home to San Diego, which was followed by a 1-0 defeat in Colorado. Despite a dynamite pair of attackers in Heung-Min Son and Denis Bouanga, LAFC has only scored 35 goals in 21 games. That’s nowhere near their standard. Son, in particular, had a serious cold stretch during the Apertura where he failed to score once. All four of his goals occurred in four consecutive games in the brief resumption before Leagues Cup. What can be blamed for this low attacking output?
LAFC fans have one target in mind: the head coach. Marc Dos Santos has gotten plenty of results in his first season at the helm, yet LAFC has a different standard. They want to win, but they also want to dominate. So when Dos Santos was named head coach in the offseason, many LAFC fans were disappointed. They were even more disappointed when he continued the same philosophy as former head coach Steve Cherundolo. The Black-and-Gold’s primary focus is defense, which eschews possession in exchange for space for Bouanga, Son, and David Martinez to attack into. The results are still pretty positive. LAFC enters tomorrow’s game with a league-leading 11 clean sheets. However, 6 of those shutouts occurred in the first 6 games of the season.
Do LAFC fans have a right to complain to this degree? Maybe! However, it mostly comes off as spoiled to every other fanbase in the league. I get it though! I’d probably be upset if my team, who has the ability to pull from the highest level of talent around the world, prefers to let the opposition dictate the game. Their summer business has also been pretty underwhelming, with more outgoings than incomings. Nathan Ordaz, Amin Boudri, and Artem Smoliakov have all left the club (with Smoliakov’s departure being a loan). Stephen Eustaquio’s loan ended as well. Only Evgeni Cheberko and Bayern Munich striker Armindo Sieb have arrived. Boudri and Smoliakov were U22 players, which opens up the possibility for LAFC to sign a DP this summer. No rumors have even materialized. It is pretty easy to laugh at the fans born with a footballing silver spoon in their mouth (especially because they used to be Galaxy fans). But some of that frustration is definitely warranted.
The heat on Dos Santos has risen over the past week in the wake of their two losses, especially given the close margins of defeat and the cratering of their collective goalscoring. LAFC has only scored 4 goals over the last 6 games, with 3 of those tallies coming in Leagues Cup. Is their slump going to be broken?
LAFC Injury Report & Projected Starting XI

Jesus is still recovering from an ACL tear. Martinez hasn’t played since August 14th against Queretaro. Palencia hasn’t played since May.

This is the same backline that started in Colorado on Wednesday, but Lloris is back in the team after getting rotated for the midweek away match. I didn’t think that goalkeepers needed rotation, but Dos Santos does. Segura has taken the lone 6 job since Eustaquio departed. Boyd is the preferred option to replace the injured Martinez, but Jacob Shaffelburg is another candidate to fill the open RW role. Bouanga and Son came off the bench against Colorado. They should be fit to start. LAFC is not going to prioritize the ball, and there are plenty of open-field threats and quality box defenders on this team.
The Timbers Report
Finally, the 22 days of fury are almost over. The Portland Timbers (8-3-9, 27 points, 9W/15S) have played 7 games in that stretch, which began with a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders. However, as a return to relative normalcy appears on the horizon, a terrifying stat is potentially about to exist.
Clean Sheets
The Portland Timbers have recorded one clean sheet across all competitions in 2026. A 6-0 win against SKC back in May is their only shutout of the season. However, if they fail to record a shutout against LAFC this weekend, they will have gone an entire calendar year with only one clean sheet.
The 0-0 draw in San Diego last year (which also functioned as the debut for Kristoffer Velde, Felipe Carballo, and Matias Rojas) took place on August 23rd. Tomorrow is August 21st, which makes this LAFC game Portland’s last chance to avoid a slight humiliation. Winning games is important, and the Timbers have been doing a lot of winning recently. But they’ve been conceding goals like a sieve for the past year. Marti Cifuentes has to stop the leakage. “When I arrived here, one clear message to the players was that we couldn’t put ourselves in a position to win games by scoring 3-4 goals. Because that’s not sustainable,” the head coach said on Friday. However, the next part of his answer was very intriguing:
"We definitely need to improve the way we play. It’s just just about defending or attacking, it’s all together. So we need to make sure that we control the games better, whether it’s through controlling possession, or through controlling space, as I said in the last game, but we need to be better at that…When you play well, you don’t concede a lot of chances. Something we were a bit disappointed in the last game against San Diego is that, despite it was a big collective effort trying to block a lot of situations when you defend deeper, that’s sometimes the outcome that you need to block a lot of shots. So it was a bit of a disappointment that in the goal we were not at the same level. Definitely something we need to improve, and especially against a team that has the quality to score, they don’t need many chances to score.”
Keeping the ball is a good form of defense purely because you need the ball to score a goal. If the other team doesn’t have it, they can’t score. Ariel Lassiter also chimed in about the team’s defensive struggles. “I think that’s the number one priority for this away match. Try to keep a clean sheet, be strong away from home, that’s something that Marti’s been hammering on recently, so that’s going to be important for us.”
Portland’s performance against San Diego likely deserved a shutout, but all it takes is one moment of indecisiveness or a half-second of hesitation for a 0 to turn to a 1. Clean sheets provide the platform for consistent success. T2 currently leads MLS NEXTPRO in shutouts with 13. They’ve already qualified for the playoffs. The Timbers’ defense is still an Achilles’ heel. Is it possible for them to get a clean sheet this weekend against such a top-heavy attack?
PTFC Injury Report & Projected Starting XI

My heart hurts for Brandon Bye. He’s been diagnosed with a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Bonetig will miss his 3rd consecutive MLS game (5th if you count Leagues Cup).

Jon Rothstein is the most dedicated reporter on the planet. His realm is college basketball, and March is the busiest time of year for any college basketball fan. He has a trademark phrase for tournament season: “We sleep in May.”
The Timbers are one game away before their brutal schedule congestion ends and some semblance of normalcy can return. This is the biggest match of the week, so it makes sense to go “pedal-to-the-metal” tomorrow. The only change I’m predicting from Wednesday’s lineup is Eric Miller getting the start for the injured Bye. I think Caicedo, Da Costa, Bassett, Lassiter, Velde, and Kelsy need to start this game. Players to watch off the bench include Vincent Janssen, Antony, Omir Fernandez, Joao Ortiz, Ian Smith, Sawyer Jura, and Diego Chara. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those supposed substitutes gets a start either.
Tactical Preview
The First 15 Minutes
Portland started better against San Diego than they did against Chicago, but they still weren’t able to create any danger. Passes remained sloppy and turnovers still occurred. However, the Timbers didn’t give up a big chance. Starting a game on the front foot requires the Timbers to score, not just prevent a concession.
Cifuentes spoke about the start of games on Friday. “It doesn’t work if it’s just for one game, so we spoke about certain things that are needed, especially the need to focus a little bit more to start against well. I think that the guys got them right. But now we need to prove it away.”
Away games have been Portland’s downfall this year. Either they start poorly, end poorly, or thrash the Seattle Sounders. Starting tomorrow’s game well (and scoring the first goal within the first 15 minutes) would force LAFC to come out of their shell. They’re just as tired as the Timbers. But they get this game at home, so they have the initiative. Snatching that initiative is Portland’s number 1 priority during the first 15 minutes of tomorrow’s game.
Ground Crosses
LAFC has plenty of quality box defenders. They’ve been used to clearing balls for years due to Dos Santos and Cherundolo’s passive tactical setups. How do you break through against a brick wall?
By crossing on the ground instead of through the air. Portland’s off-ball box movement has drastically improved in recent weeks, and there’s usually someone getting on the end of those low crosses now. It kind of stinks that Bye’s injury is robbing the Timbers of some of their best low deliveries, but it’s the proper way to put balls on the doorstep for Kelsy and company to smash home from close range. Taking shots from distance can also open those spaces. The Timbers will have a lot of the ball tomorrow. How they use it will determine whether or not they win, lose, or draw.

I stand by my take that Bretos and Dunseth are a good commentary duo. However, that assessment usually goes out the window when LAFC are involved.
Referee Report

Jon Freemon’s 2026 stats: 12 games, 24.25 fouls/game, 0.25 penalties/game, 4.67 yellows/game, 0.25 reds/game
Last Timbers game officiated: April 25, 2026 @SD 2-1 W
The same officiating concerns are present for any game involving Los Angeles Football Club. Don’t put Freemon in any position where making a decision is necessary. Freemon is a pretty normal PRO referee, but LAFC invites all kinds of officiating nonsense. This is known.
Series History
Historical record: 8-7-7, -2 goal differential
Road record: 3-4-5, -5 goal differential
Current streak: 3 unbeaten
Current road streak: 1 win
It’s pretty cool to see the Timbers have an all-time winning record against the biggest club in the Western Conference. Both LA clubs are the biggest competitive rivals that the Timbers have. They haven’t lost to LAFC in LA since 2024, which was Diego Chara’s 377th appearance for the Timbers. The club captain was also sent off in that game. Last year’s win was incredibly satisfying, and the clean sheet was a perfect cherry on top. Games against LAFC are a big measuring stick.
Table Time

A win could bump the Timbers up to 6th provided results go their way. A loss could tumble them into 12th. Not 13th, because the Sounders have a -5 goal differential and they have to go to Cincinnati this weekend. It’s gonna feel good to cheer for Evander goals again.
Austin is Portland’s next opponent on the schedule. Here’s how their upcoming week is looking. Philadelphia comes to town tomorrow, but the Leagues Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday against Toluca is being played in New Jersey. Because that makes sense and is something that actually happens in a really legitimate tournament. They’ll have to travel cross country to Portland to play three days later. I sympathize for the ridiculous scheduling, yet it's pretty OK that the Timbers get to take advantage of a wild week for the Broccolis.
Final Whistle
Marti Cifuentes knows that the Timbers need to improve in several areas. He listed his Big 3 on Friday: clean sheets, weak starts, and away performances.
Tomorrow’s game is an opportunity to work on all three of those areas. A clean sheet would be massive. A positive start would be most welcome. And a proper away performance would be delightful.
However, LAFC is still a very difficult and dangerous opponent. Denis Bouanga is now going to be matched up against Portland’s 3rd-string right back. The Timbers need to focus on limiting those counterattack opportunities. The counterpress will be important. So will ball retention. Portland has struggled with both of those things over the past year. Can they succeed with both tomorrow?
It’s the end of a grueling stretch. The exhaustion has piled up. The soreness is palpable. Yet the Timbers have to pull it together for another crucial 90 minutes before a normal week can occur. They completed the season sweep against San Diego on Wednesday. Time to bust out the brooms again. The climb continues.
