VANCOUVER - Sometimes the lesson you need to learn comes at a time when everything seemed to be going the right way. Sometimes you need a moment of adversity to understand what not to do, and the consequences that come with it.
To those players that may take a moment to read the words written by those who don't play anymore; Remember who you are. Remember what it means to put your hard work all out on the field, remember that these adverse moments provide an opportunity to learn, and that not learning from the mistakes can become a slippery slope which is extremely hard to pull yourself from. Remember, nobody is coming to save you. You only have yourself, and the players alongside you.
At home, the Whitecaps have a solid record against the Seattle Sounders. Even away, the Whitecaps have walked into Lumen Field and seized the moment to walk away with draws, or wins. The way this team is assembled, they have no reason to look as nervous as they did. Short fuses, miscalculated back passes, miscommunicated positioning plays; fundamental plays that any other night would go without a hiccup turned into a uncharacteristic 0-3 loss.
Credit where due, Seattle took notice, and took the opportunity gifted to them. The next closest rivals and Cascadia Cup competitors needed no coaxing or incentive to capitalize on the many mistakes that were gifted to them.
A clean sheet performance for the visiting team is not something that the Whitecaps are known for allowing. The only saving grace is that the CONCACAF Champions Cup doesn't count towards regular MLS season points or standings, and hopefully the boys in blue can bounce back as they host Minnesota on Sunday.
