There's not a lot you can say about this match other than, you had to be there. In their potential last home game of the season, the Whitecaps filled both the lower and upper bowl of BC Place; with a staggering 53,957 people in attendance.
The Vancouver Rise FC club was welcomed and celebrated their Norther Super League title win.
The match kicked off with high anticipation. 53,000 fans were eager to get the energy going, and managed to do so while the play on field took some time to heat up. Inevitably, however, the Whitecaps found a way to pot the late 1st half goal, and went up 2-0 in the first half's extra time. An unbelievable goal from Emmanuel Sabbi that had been launched from a long ball from Yohei Takaoka in the 39th minute to send the crow into a frenzy, and a rebound cleanup from Mathias Laborda put the Caps' in a comfortable position going into the half.
LAFC came back from the halftime determined to not go down without a fight. Son Heung-Min netted two incredible goals, the tying goal in extra time, to give LAFC a very strong chance to send the Whitecaps home. A red card to Tristan Blackmon mean that extra time was full on survival mode for the Whitecaps, and Belal Halbouni was unable to continue due to injury, the Whitecaps were forced further into survival model playing 9 against 11.
LAFC had numerous chances to end it, an opportunity came when they managed to hit both posts and the crossbar in the same sequence, in a moment where you could feel the entire stadium holding it's collective breath. Knowing the Whitecaps could have a chance if they made it to penalty kicks, all that mattered was getting to the end of extra time.
When the final whistle finally blew the Whitecaps could feel the possibility of the win within grasp. Having subbed Thomas Muller off prior to the end of the match, he was unavailable for the initial round of penalty kicks. Ocampo missed his penalty kick, but Berhalter, Nelson, Gauld, all scored their chances, while Son Heung-Min missed his critical opportunity to extend the penalty kicks and allow Mathias Laborda to seal the deal with the final kick of the night.
You could have sworn the roof of BC Place was going to come off with how loud it was. Like I said, you had to be there.
