Photo Epic: Whitecaps FC vs LAFC - Aug 1, 2026

VANCOUVER - We haven't seen LAFC since last season's playoffs, and if you don't remember that match, please go and re-watch the highlights. It was safe to assume that the return of Son Heung-min was going to draw and elevated level of anticipation going into this match. One of Canada's Wold Cup players, Jacob Shaffelburg, returned to BC Place after his time with the national team, now as an opponent than a fan favourite.

With the return to MLS home games post World Cup, the Southsiders fan marches also return. Every weekend match, the Southsiders supporters group marches from Dublin Crossing on Granville Street, all the way down Robson Street to BC Place. Smoke and chants fill the air as the downtown core of the city erupts to life with hundreds of supporters on the way to the match.

While the fan atmosphere was full of excitement and anticipation, the on field play was hesitant and calculated. Everyone seemingly keeping the last matchup front of mind, knowing that any misstep can result in a wide open long ball to Denis Bouanga or Son Heung-min.

A massive set of changes to the lineup coming out of the World Cup, with Joedrick Pupe returning to Belgium after being on loan from Sint-Truidense VV, Aziel Jackson returning to Poland after being on loan from Jagiellonia Białystok, Sebastian Schonlau returning to German 2. Bundesliga league to play for Holstein Kielz, and the biggest of them all, Sebastian Berhalter leaving the team to join his old pal Aidan Morris and the squad at Middlesbrough F.C.. It was a disappointment to not have Seba at home one last time, no video board message, no real sendoff for the man who held the middle of this team together. Coming off his World Cup performance though, it was hard to fathom him not getting picked up internationally.

You can see where this team would begin to breakdown if things go sideways. Berhalter was the glue that kept the middle of the field together. If you haven't noticed, the Whitecaps play a lot of what I call "swing ball". They rarely play up the middle, a tactic that almost every youth soccer association teaches as a fundamental. Where the team tends to struggle is right at the top of the box, where clear shooting opportunities are passed on for chaos creating corner crosses, which are high danger but low probability especially if the ball doesn't get redirected on target. At least with the top of the box shots you have a much better chance of being on target if the bounce does get favourable. When it works though, with Sabbi, Sabaly, or Caicedo on the forward wings, a player like Berhalter had the ability to intentionally direct the swing traffic through the middle. Müller has a big hand in this direction as well, spotting open holes and deficiencies in opposing defensive systems that Berhalter could feed through with players like Ocampo and Johnson being stop gaps and rotatable through the corner triangle plays that keep the Whitecaps possession numbers high.

Larraz needed to fill some big shoes and quickly. Between Cubas and Laborda you've got a middle defensive tandem that are willing to take foul risks to regain the ball, but Larraz would be tasked with taking over most of Berhalter's former role, including taking corner kicks. Early in the season you could feel the nervousness out of Larraz, and credit where due, his confidence has certainly stepped up.

Is the team in just as good of a position as they were before going into the World Cup break? ...No, they're not, and Jesper has a small hill to climb to find out which combination of players he can consistently throw out on the field to give the Whitecaps the best opportunity to maintain their top of the Western Conference table position (with 2 games in hand) in this back half of the season.

The second largest home crowd of a Whitecaps home MLS game of over 40,000 welcomed the team to the pitch to start the match, as the supporters section kick off the match singing 'Boundary Road, take me home, to the place, I belong'.

The Whitecaps got off to a decent start, finding some ground maintaining possession, some hiccups but overall good movement, with a few opportunities in close denied by the abundance of bodies in the box more than anything else. A few misses and offsides would keep the Whitecaps from really finding the slot to take the lead.

Which would leave to the inevitable slip up, a missed pass from Blackmon send LAFC the other way, Bouanga coming up with the ball and slotting a pass to Heung-min to put away the opening goal of the match in the 37th minute.

After half there was a clear need to make some personnel changes. Sabbi returned from injury to replace Ryan Gauld, Sabaly comes in for Cubas, and later in the match, Priso comes on for Badwal, in an effort to generate some offence rather than play on the back foot the entire time.

More chances would come, and Müller would finally draw a penalty opportunity, and you know how those end up; with the ball in the back of the net. Life. bursts back into the crowd at BC Place as Müller ties the game 1-1. White just missed the outside post and despite the expedited offensive push, neither side was able to capitalize on any opportunity, and the game would end in a 1-1 draw.
