Providence Park Holds Greatness in Its Bones

The Portland Thorns are home to legends, and before the match on Saturday, one of the most beloved players to ever wear the crest returned to Providence Park. The Thorns welcomed back Tobin Heath to celebrate her retirement and legendary career that was ultimately cut short by a recurring knee injury.

Heath was part of the Portland Thorns from the very beginning, joining the club for the NWSL's inaugural season in 2013 and helping establish the identity of a team and fanbase that would grow into one of the most important in the world. 

Tobin is your favorite soccer player's favorite soccer player, and her impact on the game is undeniable. From the very beginning, she was simply built differently. Coined the USA’s most skillful player by the U.S. Soccer Federation, she introduced a creativity, individuality, and freedom into the game that hadn’t ever been seen before. 

She helped the Thorns win championships in 2013 and 2017. With the USWNT, she's won two Olympic gold medals and one bronze, and two FIFA World Cups while silvering another. 

Tobin played her last professional game in 2022, officially retiring in 2025 after countless surgeries and attempts to return back to the game she loved so dearly. A love that was mutual.  

More than 22,000 fans packed into Providence Park to celebrate a legend while subsequently supporting the newest generation of Thorns greatness.

Alongside Tobin was her wife and USWNT treasure Christen Press, as well as former club or country teammates Christine Sinclair, Becky Sauerbrunn, Allie Long, Lauren Holiday, Marian Dougherty and Lindsey Heaps.

Once the match kicked off, the opening half was a back-and-forth battle, with neither side able to completely take control despite Denver hoarding more of the ball.

This was a match of close calls; in the 23rd minute, Pietra Tordin fed Sophia Wilson a beautiful leading ball, which she delivered barely an inch outside of the post.

In the 44th minute, Jessie Fleming found another opening, sending a ball through the middle and into the path of Sophia Wilson, who carried it into the Denver box before skillfully putting her shot over goalkeeper Kat Asman and into the net. 

It was Wilson's 10th goal of the season, adding another historic milestone to an already remarkable career. Wilson has now scored at least 10 goals in four NWSL seasons, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026, becoming the first player in league history to accomplish that feat.

Portland entered halftime with a 1-0 advantage and came out of the break determined to find another. Push after push, there was a hunger within the Thorns' attack that we witness every special occasion. 

In the 50th minute, Sophia Wilson found the net again only for it to be called back for being offside. In the 77th minute, Wilson nearly found her second goal only to watch in disbelief as the ball took an odd bounce off the post. 

With all of these missed opportunities, Portland was left with the difficult task of protecting a one-goal advantage through the final whistle.

Denver controlled 62.6 percent of possession and finished with 12 shots. The Thorns finished with 16 shots of their own.

Behind the back line, Mackenzie Arnold handled everything that made its way through, recording three saves and adding another clean sheet for Portland. It was the Thorns' ninth shutout of the season.

Portland has now gone 13 consecutive regular-season home matches without a loss, posting a 9-0-4 record dating back to September 2025.

Tobin Heath helped define the earliest years of the Portland Thorns, playing with a tenacity that inspired an entire generation. A generation which included Sophia Wilson, who is now building a legacy of her own in the same stadium while inspiring the next.
