Timbers Sign Veteran Defender Eric Miller

The nine-year MLS veteran returns to Portland as a senior player.

The Timbers have completed the signing of free agent defender Eric Miller. Miller started his soccer career playing for the Timbers’ U23s after attending Creighton University. He entered the league via the SuperDraft and was picked 5th overall by the Montreal Impact. He has bounced around the league since. He has been traded three times for GAM and spent those seasons with Colorado, Minnesota, and NYCFC. His last club was Nashville, where he was from their debut season in 2020 until last year.

Miller is a pure depth signing for the Timbers. After trading Bill Tuiloma last week, the Timbers needed to sign someone for squad depth numbers. Miller is not just squad depth though. He is primarily a right back, but can play center back if necessary. He will not be expected to start and will primarily come off the bench or make spot starts in short weeks. Overall, I like this signing. It’s not the big name at CB that is still a pressing issue, but at the start of the season getting a player with league experience for no transfer fee is a good thing. Welcome back to the Rose City, Eric!
