Mega Photo Epic: 3 Matches in 6 Days

VANCOUVER - 3 in 6 is a crazy schedule. You can thank the World Cup for the condensed week, and the lineup changes and management that Jesper had to put out to keep everyone healthy, or able to play reasonable amount of minutes, while hopefully risking little chance of injury.

The week started with a Sunday afternoon game in Seattle. The usually scheduled on a Saturday all Cascadia matchup was pushed due to a Seahawks preseason game, where they lost to the Dallas Cowboys (foreshadowing).

I was lucky to take the now annual trip to Seattle to cover the match again, and it's always creatively invigorating to work in a new stadium with different angles, lighting, and limitations. Last year the Whitecaps claimed the Cascadia Cup with a 2-2 draw. This year, all they needed was a draw or a win to secure the Cascadia Cup for a second year in a row. Meanwhile the Seattle Sounders haven't come close to winning a Cascadia Cup since their last win in 2021, something that was on the mind of the Sounders coach during his post match comments about how fans were leaving the stadium early before the match ended.

To be fair, the match was interesting. The first half felt indecisive. Wavering pushes garnished no results on either side, and the inevitability of a resulting draw felt certain. Whatever happened at halftime though, the Whitecaps came back out of the dressing room with a re-ignited feeling of opportunity, that the Sounders weren't taking the threat of a loss seriously, and that they had an opportunity to not only take the Cascadia Cup while on the road again, but to do so with a win in front of at least 2 busloads of Whitecaps fans who made the trip to the match, and who made their presence known.

All the issue with the pitch at BC Place, while replaced after the World Cup, we forget that many other MLS venues also use a turf surface. Lumen field is one of them, to the dismay of Seattle fans alike, as there's proven grass surfaces in the NFL as well. While nowhere near as bad as the MLS fields in Chicago, or New York, the turf at Lumen field presents a different issue than that of BC Place; in the it has a bite to it. We saw this last year when Brian White went down with a leg injury as the field there really has no give or breakaway, and clings to cleat studs like a firm corporate handshake. This year, Jeevan Badwal took a sideswipe that sent him face first into the unforgiving surface, sending him straight off in concussion protocol.

Three days later, the Whitecaps were set to host the Houston Dynamo and launch the Archive Collection, which celebrated the original franchise that would become the Whitecaps, the Vancouver 86er's. An incredible kit to see in person, and the Houston side would debut their Archival Kit as well, flipping the typical home and away colours for this match.

Houston sits close to the top of the table in the West, and we anticipated a frustrating match. What the Whitecaps weren't expecting was a near full stalemate. Even after Houston went up 1-0 in the 34th minute, there really was no chances to be had. The lone goal was an opportune strike, and the remainder of the match felt like the clock was ticking down faster that it was. Coming off such a fast turnaround from the Sunday match against Seattle, a softer starting 11 was sent out, minute management was in play, and while the Whitecaps held the majority of possession throughout the match, they ultimately couldn't get the goal they needed to draw. They certainly gave themselves the chances as fresh legs came on later in the second half, it just was ultimately not in the cards.

The third and final match of the week came with FC Dallas in town for a Saturday afternoon clash. Last year FC Dallas were one of the teams the Whitecaps needed to clear in their pathway to the MLS Cup Final, a 4-2 win on aggregate sent the Whitecaps through to play LAFC, and in their first meeting since that series earlier in the year the Whitecaps took a 3-2 win on the road. On paper, the Whitecaps looked to be the better team, but with 3 games in 6 days, a team managing minutes and injuries, it would come down to the on pitch performance more than the expected goals predictions.

What ensued was a demonstration of absolute dominance. A reminder to any team in the league of what this team can do if you give them any rope. The first half produced 4 goal, starting in the 11th minute, and continued right into first half stoppage time. A warning shot across the bow of any other team that even without full health, this team is deadly, and quick to strike. Most teams would then consider just parking the bus, and putting up an iron wall of defence, and that's just not in the nature of a team that is always hungry for another goal. They would get the 5th goal mid second half, a Brian White brace, and outright securing the top spot in the Western Conference.
