VANCOUVER - What better way to judge a team's consistency than to have Sporting KC, a team near the bottom of the table, come into BC Place to test the Whitecaps. Are they a team as good as their record says, or are they stuck and temporarily anchored in optimism and overconfidence?

There are two games left in the current home stand before the Whitecaps go on an extended road trip while BC Place and Vancouver hosts World Cup matches. In these two home matches, the Whitecaps need to secure solid wins, as the road win percentage drops significantly. A study in 2021 noted that the away winning average is one of the lowest across major sports leagues. With an 8 game road trip in the horizon, the Whitecaps need as much of a cushion as possible at home if the average win on the road would assume a 2-6 record while away.

"...MLS away teams fell back to a 25% win percentage in 2021."

We all know that this team does have the capability to outperform the expected record, but with the stint including current playoff picture teams such as San Jose, San Diego, and Minnesota, and Chicago, you can't entirely ignore the expected outcome or ask other teams to sit back at their own expense. Everyone understands what the Whitecaps are possible of, and everyone wants that boost of confidence that comes with beating a team that just came from the MLS Cup final a season ago.

Kickoff started with an immediate push when Emmanuel Sabbi slipped a header just outside of the goal post in the 3rd minute. The Whitecaps would continue to roll on and Sabbi would get on the scoresheet ten minutes later after he ended a pinball sequence by sweeping in the opening goal.

All the scoring would happen in the first half, Bruno Caicedo scored his first goal for the club off a bad defensive giveaway in the 24th minute, and Thomas Müller would later score a decisive header to make it 3-0 before halftime even expired.

The Whitecaps had numerous additional chances in the first half, and into the second half. Sabbi was nearly on the board for two, Berhalter had a header go out off the crossbar, Ocampo, and Elloumi both had solid chances that either went wide or into the hands of the opposing keeper.

The fact that there are more than a few names constantly on, or near the scoresheet is good for the Whitecaps. There are still players out on injury, but being able to spread goal production across the team means that everyone is getting a chance to contribute, and that "more is more". Being able to rotate pieces in and out gives the Whitecaps the best opportunity to continue to produce while on the upcoming road trip, something they will need to do if they want to stay atop the MLS standings.
